MARINE AND FISHING SERVICES

Key Focus Areas:

 Marine Ecosystems and Climate Change

  1. Marine Conservation and      Fisheries Management:
    • Somalia boasts one of the      longest coastlines in Africa, making the marine environment central to       both its economy and food security. However, unsustainable fishing       practices, over fishing, pollution, and climate change are threatening       marine biodiversity and fish stocks. The Malaq Maye Institute’s research       focuses on developing sustainable fisheries management models,       promoting the protection of marine habitats, and supporting policies that       regulate fishing activities.
    • Key Project: The Somalia Marine       Protection and Sustainable Fisheries Initiative is an ongoing effort       to assess the health of fish stocks and marine biodiversity along       Somalia's coast. The initiative works to engage local fishing communities       in sustainable practices while advocating for stronger regulatory       frameworks at the national level.

  1. Coastal Zone Management and      Habitat Protection:
    • Somalia’s coastal zones are       vulnerable to a range of climate-related impacts, including sea-level       rise, coastal erosion, and habitat degradation. Our research on coastal       zone management aims to protect key habitats such as coral reefs,       mangroves, and seagrass beds that play vital roles in maintaining       biodiversity and safeguarding coastal communities from the effects of       storms and flooding.
    • Key Project: The Somali Coastal       Habitats Restoration Program focuses on rehabilitating critical       ecosystems along the Somali coast. The project combines community-led       initiatives with scientific research to restore mangroves and coral reefs       that act as natural barriers against coastal erosion and provide breeding       grounds for fish.

  1. Climate Change Adaptation      and Resilience:
    • Climate change poses a       significant threat to Somalia, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall       patterns, and increased frequency of droughts and floods affecting both       inland and coastal areas. The Institute’s work in climate change       adaptation is centred on developing strategies to increase       resilience in vulnerable communities, with a focus on coastal populations       who depend on marine resources for their livelihoods.
    • Key Project: The Climate Resilience       for Coastal Communities in Somalia project provides practical       solutions for adapting to climate impacts through better water       management, alternative livelihoods, and improved infrastructure to       withstand climate shocks. The project includes pilot programs in select       coastal towns to test adaptive strategies that can be scaled up       nationally.

  1. Policy Development for      Marine and Environmental Protection:
    • In collaboration with the       Somali government and international partners, the Malaq Maye Institute       works on policy development aimed at improving marine governance       and enforcing environmental protections. Our goal is to provide       evidence-based policy recommendations that address illegal fishing,       pollution control, and the sustainable use of marine resources. We also       advocate for stronger environmental legislation and cross-border       cooperation on marine issues.
    • Key Project: The Somali Marine       Governance Framework is a collaborative policy development project       designed to create a comprehensive national framework for managing marine       resources. This project includes workshops, stakeholder consultations,       and policy briefs aimed at enhancing regulatory capacity within Somalia’s       marine and environmental sectors.

  1. Community Engagement and      Education:
    • A key element of the Malaq   Maye Institute’s mission is to involve local communities in environmental       stewardship and marine conservation. We believe that education and       awareness are critical to empowering coastal populations to protect their       marine environment. Through workshops, public awareness campaigns, and       community-based projects, the Institute promotes environmental       education and the importance of sustainable marine practices.
    • Key Project: The Marine Stewardship       and Education Program works with fishing communities and schools to       raise awareness about the impacts of overfishing, marine pollution, and       climate change on Somalia’s coastline. The program includes       capacity-building workshops aimed at equipping local stakeholders with       the knowledge and tools needed for sustainable resource management.
